Gather your materials. You will need: a putty knife, chisel, caulk remover, backer rod, GE Silicone II Window and Door, caulking gun and a tooling device (this could be a spoon or just your wet finger).

Make sure doors and windows are closing securely and do not need to be rehung. Check the condition of the siding and framing to see if it needs to be replaced. Inspect the caulk around the frame to see if it has become brittle or pulled away from the joint it is protecting.

Use a chisel or similar tool to scrape off old caulk, and use a caulk remover for stubborn or hard-to-reach areas. Clean the area properly.

In large gaps that cannot be filled with the width of sealant you are using, cut a backer rod to the right length and insert it into the gap using a putty knife. Make sure there is a 1/4 inch area for the new sealant to fill.

Lay a bead of Silicone II Window and Door along the seam, making sure it completely fills the joint.

Immediately use the tooling device to wipe off any excess sealant and smooth the sealant.
