Residential home waterproofing depends on getting the exterior detail right: the bead, the rough opening, the penetration, the seam. A surface joint and a rough gap do different work, so the material should change with the condition. This guide helps contractors decide where GE sealant, insulating foam, or both fit the job.
If the detail needs a finished water-shedding bead, think sealant. If the opening is a rough void, size it before reaching for foam. Some jobs need both, but only when each material has its own work to do.
Home waterproofing depends on reading the failure point
Residential home waterproofing is a field read. The joint, gap, void, or seam tells you more than habit does: exposure, movement, substrate, gap size, paint requirement, and whether drainage or flashing is part of the assembly.
That split matters in the field.
The bead needs a clean, durable surface seal. The void may need to be filled behind the face before the exposed edge is finished.
To help prevent water intrusion, the material has to match the work the bead, the fill, or both are meant to do.
Waterproofing windows and doors: separate the exterior bead from the rough opening
When waterproofing windows and doors, separate two places: the exterior bead and the rough opening.
At the exterior bead, you’re looking at the finished joint.
It has to shed water at the face, move with the joint, bond to the surrounding material, and meet the finish requirement. What it’s bonding to matters, too: a bead against trim is not the same work as a bead against a masonry return.
Once the finished bead is the work, tie your product call to the bead’s job:
- Non-paintable 100% silicone bead: Use GE Advanced Silicone Window & Door Sealant where paint is not required. Use GE Supreme Silicone Window & Door Sealant when the joint needs a higher-performance 100% silicone bead.
- Paintable finished bead: Use GE Pro Seal Max Window & Door for a paintable hybrid bead.

At the rough opening, you’re sizing the gap behind the face, around the frame. Use low-expansion foam to fill the rough space without putting excess pressure against the frame.
For a rough opening gap around a window or door frame, use GE Window & Door Insulating Foam for low-expansion fill.

The exterior perimeter is a separate check in your install. The bead still has to shed water at the exposed face, and flashing and drainage still have to manage water around the opening.
Apply the same principle to exterior penetrations, where the gap is often less regular and the exposed face may still need a finished bead.
Exterior penetrations need the right fill and the right finish
Exterior penetrations often don’t have the clean geometry of a window or door opening.
A utility line, vent, wiring, HVAC line, sill-plate gap, or crawlspace opening can show one size at the face and a different void behind it.
For penetrations, a useful waterproofing tip is: size the void behind the face, not just the opening you can see from the surface.
Use the gap size to narrow the foam choice:
- Pest-prone gaps up to 1 inch: Use GE Pest Block Insulating Foam.
- Larger gaps from 1 inch to 3 inches: Use GE Big Gaps & Cracks Insulating Foam.

After you fill the void, read the exposed face again.
If foam is visible at the face, protect it from UV exposure and finish the edge with the appropriate exterior bead or covering
Some service-line penetrations need a cleaner boundary than foam alone can provide. Foam is not a firestop. For threaded pipe work, use PTFE tape or an approved thread compound. Use GE Sealant on the exterior opening where a bead belongs.
Foundation-adjacent gaps call for localized sealing and clear limits
In the field, how to waterproof home exteriors is often a scope call: localized sealant work versus a larger drainage or foundation-system problem.
Around the foundation line, judge whether the gap is local enough for cartridge work.
An above-grade masonry transition, concrete gap, mortar joint, or stone detail may be local enough for cartridge work if the surfaces are sound and the joint is not pointing to structural movement or a drainage issue.
For a localized concrete, mortar, stone, or masonry joint that needs a compatible exterior sealant, GE Concrete Silicone Sealant is a good fit.
If the condition points to drainage failure or broader foundation movement, it has moved beyond cartridge repair. That kind of condition needs a broader project read.
Roofline, gutter, and metal details need targeted sealing
At rooflines, work from the visible seam or metal edge.
If it is visible and accessible, check what it is made of, how exposed it is, and whether the work stays at that joint.
Match the product to the localized material:
- Localized gutter seam: Use GE Gutter Silicone Sealant.
- Localized metal edge or exterior metal joint: Use GE Metal Silicone Sealant.

If the water path extends beyond the seam or metal edge, the job has moved beyond that joint. Roof-system work, from flashing replacement to shingle or membrane issues, needs a different scope.
Home waterproofing: make the product call from the work in front of you
The bead you’re sealing and the gap you’re filling are different calls. So is a penetration with an exposed face or a seam you can treat as localized sealant work.
At that spot, decide what the material has to do: shed water, fill space, move with the joint, or take paint.
